Frequently Asked Questions

Clear, honest answers to help you feel informed and confident as you explore doula support.

What is a doula?

A doula is a trained support person who provides emotional, physical, and informational support during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Doulas do not replace medical providers, but work alongside them to support you and your preferences.

What does a doula do during labor?

During labor, a doula provides continuous support, including:

  • Comfort measures and positioning

  • Emotional encouragement and reassurance

  • Guidance for breathing and coping techniques

  • Support for partners

  • Advocacy and help with informed decision-making

Our role is to help you feel supported, grounded, and empowered throughout your birth experience.

Do you attend hospital, birth center, or home births?

Support availability depends on individual circumstances and care plans. We will discuss your planned birth setting during your consultation to ensure alignment and clear expectations.

Do you support first-time parents?

Yes. We support both first-time and experienced parents. Many first-time parents find doula support especially helpful for education, reassurance, and guidance throughout pregnancy and birth.

Do you support cesarean births?

Yes. Doula support can be valuable for both planned and unplanned cesarean births. Support may include emotional reassurance, advocacy, partner support, and postpartum guidance.

Is postpartum support included?

Postpartum support is offered as part of our services and may include emotional support, recovery guidance, infant care education, and feeding support. Details are discussed during your consultation.

Do you offer lactation support?

Yes. We provide basic lactation and feeding support and can offer guidance, education, and referrals if additional care is needed.

Do you accept Medicaid?

Yes. Peony Prenatal, Birth & Postpartum offers Medicaid-covered doula services when eligibility requirements are met. Coverage and services vary by state. We will review eligibility and next steps during your consultation.

How do I know if I qualify for Medicaid doula services?

Eligibility is determined by your state’s Medicaid program. During your consultation, we can discuss your coverage and guide you through the process.

When should I contact a doula?

Many families reach out during pregnancy as early as possible to secure availability and begin building a relationship. However, support may still be available later in pregnancy depending on scheduling.

How do I get started?

To begin, we recommend scheduling a consultation. This gives us the opportunity to learn more about your needs, answer questions, and determine whether we are a good fit.
